Zip Manager Update Version 3.0W
-------------------------------
Novenber 02 1990
This file contains important information on Version 3.0W of Zip Manager and
Windows 3.0
***************************************************************************
This version will function on computers that refused to run 3.01 Of ZM
***************************************************************************
In solving the bios problem for 99.9 % of the computers out there with
version 3.01 of Zip Manager a few weird hardware and Windows combinations
would not allow version 3.01 to work at all. So here is 3.0W the W stands
for weird hardware glitch! This should take care of those that had a problem
with version 3.01. Keep in mind that you will need to keep your path
names as short as possible to ensure that Windows won't truncate the
characters before they can be passed to PKZIP and the other program
files.
Windows and the DOS Environment.
-------------------------------
In our examination of the DOS environment and the way Windows reacts with it
the following suggestions may be helpful.
DOS Programs and the Command Line.
-----------------------------------
As mentioned in the Windows User's Manual you should not pass more than
12 characters as a command line argument when using the ? in a PIF file.
The reason for this we discovered, was that in most instances only 12 - 17
characters can be passed as command line args. When you go beyond this limit
the args become truncated(cut off) after the limit is reached.
A good rule of thumb is to keep your sub-directory names as short as possible. If
The deeper you nest them below the root, the more likely you are to have
the parameters passed to them become truncated. This is less critical when
you are using a native Windows Program since the Program Manager will
change to the directory that holds the Windows executable before any
parameters are passed thus lowering the number of characters need to
be passed as arguments.
DOS Diagnostic Programs run from the Windows Shell
--------------------------------------------------
In talking to a large number of users it appears that running a diagnostic
program that returns memory usage, bios type and date etc... can in
most cases cause windows to lose the location of its programs. On more than
occasion while asking a user a specific question on their hardware
they ran a program like Nortons SI and when they pressed Alt Esc to return
to windows the environment was so scrambled that a warm boot, and often
a complete re-start was necessary in order for Windows to recover.
We hope that the above information will make using Windows 3.0 a more
enjoyable experience. As always if you need technical support with
Zip Manager feel free to call us during normal business hours.
